ABOUT ABOUT

Join us for this special Nooniversity, co-hosted by AIA Kansas City and USGBC Central Plains, about WELL buildings.

The adaptive reuse of 1640 Baltimore was conceived as a mixed-use office and commercial space, designed as a prototype for the studied interaction of four sustainable, site, and wellness standards.  The three-story, 43,000 square-foot building would have served as home for the BNIM in Kansas City, and provided an additional 12,000 square-feet of leasable space. During the design process, 1640 Baltimore came to be known as "Building Positive: A Four-in-One Prototype" due to its positive attributes of community-building.

The workplace was designed as a laboratory for exploration and research while targeting WELL Building Certification, LEEDv4 Platinum certification, Living Building Certification and Sustainable Sites. As a part of these targets, the project was designed with a goal of net-positive energy, producing all of the buildings energy needs on site, plus an additional 5 percent.

The story we will share during this session will focus on how the WELL Building Certification impacted design decisions and served as a tool to navigate other rating systems being evaluated. The Building Positive prototype has changed the way BNIM thinks about design by transforming our High-Performance Integrated Design approach into one that is centered on Human Purposed Integrated Design and the importance of elevating people in and through design.

This program is worth 1 HSW and lunch will be provided.
