Carbon Emissions for the extraction, transportation, and construction of new buildings will account for 72% of emissions in the building and construction industry over the next 10 years. New building operations will only account for 28% of this footprint. Structural systems account for the majority of embodied carbon in buildings. This session will explore existing and emerging technologies that can help lower these industry emissions globally through the built environment. Jeremy Knoll is an Associate Principal with BNIM Architects, and will present the current status of carbon emissions, as well as define basic terms to use in its discussion. Erika Winters-Downey is a Senior Engineering Manager with McCownGordon Construction, with a background in structural engineering and the structural steel industry. She will discuss steel production methods, strategies to reduce embodied carbon of steel-framed structures, as well as present the new EC3 (Embodied Carbon in Construction) calculator. Trevor Acorn is a Principal with Walter P Moore Structural Engineers, and will give a background of embodied carbon of concrete structures, as well as strategies to minimize emissions during design and construction. Shannon Seipel worked with LaFarge Cement to develop a low-carbon concrete mix design and specification in 2010. She now works with CarbonCure, representing an emerging technology involving direct injection of captured CO2 within the concrete manufacturing process. Following brief presentations by each speaker and a guided discussion, the audience will have an opportunity to explore the impacts of these technologies on their current projects. Attendees will leave the presentation with a clear list of priority strategies to begin implementing in practice immediately.
