This module from the Opportunities in the In-Between explores and expounds upon the many architectural opportunities that are present within the means of egress requirements of Chapter 10 of the International Building Code. Though the building codes can often be viewed as an adversary to the architectural agenda, by gaining a nuanced level understanding of the meaning and application of the code, the building code can become an asset to the architectural agenda. This module is aimed at equipping architects to that end.

The process that this presentation follows begins with a deep dive into minutia of several sections of code within Chapter 10. In this investigation into the building codes the module will focus on how to calculate the occupant load of the building properly and creatively, how to determine the minimum required number of exits based on prescriptive and performance requirements, and how to parse out the differences between the four primary egressing components offered in Chapter 10. After this study of the text of the building code, the module will shift to applying what was learned through considering three project case studies where creative egress strategies were integrated to further the architectural and development goals.

This program is worth 1 HSW.  You must attend the full session in order to get AIA credit.  If you leave the Zoom meeting early, no credit will be reported.
